DIY Pillowcase Hampers

For the five years we’ve dealt with an awkward hamper situation in our closet.  We have this blank wall that would be a ideal place for our three part hamper, if it wasn’t right next to the doorway.  We’ve placed it there before and it basically blocks the doorway.  So we pushed it in the corner under a rack of shirts.

This is what I finally (after 5 years) came up with:

It’s so nice to have the hampers using up the wall space we were not previously utilizing and to have plenty of room to walk through the doorway.  And now we can use the space under the shirts for shoes!

This project took literally minutes to do.  Maybe 15 minutes.

Here’s the supply list:

  • Pillowcases (king size fits about 1 load of laundry)  I purchased 2 sets of 2 from Target for $12.99/set.  You could also just use old ones you already have.  Or these could be sewn pretty easily.
  • Curtain Grommets (1 inch works well) You’ll need two grommets per pillowcase.  I purchased 2 packages of grommets at Jo Ann Fabrics for $9.99/package.  Each package had 8 grommets.  (I made other hampers for another space)
  • Wall hooks I found mine at Home Depot for around $3/hook.  I used single hooks (on the ends) and double hooks (between hampers)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

The process is pretty simple.  Install grommets at the opening of the pillowcase, a few inches from the pillowcase sides.  The grommets come with a template.

Seriously easy!

Here are the hooks I used.

I later decided to add labels on each hamper using my embroidery sewing machine.

I take the hamper off the hooks, empty the laundry into the washer and toss the hamper right in with it.  The grommets have held up great so far!

As for the old, awkward hamper…

The girls have fun pushing each other around on their new toy.
